Scotland’s Budget isn’t just numbers on a page — it’s Scotland’s money, invested to secure our future.

And it’s about making sure that investment reaches communities like ours.

Across the Borders and Midlothian, people tell me the same thing on doorsteps, in town centres and at local events. Families are feeling the pressure. Bills are rising. Household budgets are stretched. This Budget is about responding to that reality and putting support where it matters most.

This Budget will make a difference day to day. Support like prescriptions and eye tests without charges at the point of use, bus travel covered for under 22s and over 60s, and the continued freeze on ScotRail fares all add up. For anyone commuting to Edinburgh or travelling between towns across the Borders, that helps take a bit of pressure off.

Health is another issue I hear about all the time. Record investment in our NHS and social care is about making sure services are there when you need them, and that families are not left worrying about getting the support they rely on.

For families raising children here, there is more help too. The Scottish Child Payment is increasing, there is extra support for families with babies, school meals for younger pupils and tuition covered for Scottish students. It is about giving young people the chance to build their future here at home.

The Budget also strengthens funding to prevent violence against women and girls, backing the organisations and frontline workers who provide support and protection in our communities.

Local councils across the Borders and Midlothian depend on this funding to keep essential services running, from schools to social care to the everyday things people rely on. Investment in housing, transport and climate action is about making sure our towns and villages can thrive in the years ahead.

No budget fixes everything overnight. But this one is focused on easing pressure now while investing in the long-term future of places like ours.

And as always, if we cross paths at the shops, the rugby, or out and about, please stop and say hello. I am always keen to hear what matters most to you and your family, because it matters to me and my family too.
